If there would be only one food that I could choose to bring to a desert island, it definitely would be oatmeal. In my book there is no breakfast that is more perfect and it makes also an awesome lunch, dinner or snack. On my search for steel cut oats, which are apparently one of the purest form of oatmeal you can make, I stumbled over this bag:
As it turned out this is the German equivalent for oat bran. Funny that I know ingredients by their English name and not how they are called in German. And who would have thought that this accidental buy would make for the most perfect version of fluffy oatmeal I cooked so far?

The Perfect Fluffy Oatmeal
- 1/2 cup oat bran
- 2 tbsp quick oats
- 1/2 cup milk of choice
- 1 cup water
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- dash of vanilla
- pinch of salt
Place the oat bran, quick oats, milk and water in a pot. When it starts to cook, lower heat to medium-low and let them simmer until all liquid is absorbed. Add the egg and spices. Keep stirring on low heat for 2 minutes and let the magic happen.
Pour into a bowl and dig in, or into some tupperware container to place in your fridge for later. I did not give you any portion-recommendations since you can enjoy it as a meal on it’s own or add some fruit or yogurt or cottage cheese or more milk or … to it, the opportunities are endless.
I will use this batch for snacks for the next 2 or 3 days, and they will mostly look like this:
I love to add a lot to my oatmeal, that is why the portion will be enough for 3-4 snacks. This bowl is made of a base of greek yogurt and cottage cheese, a layer of oatmeal, poured over with some milk and topped of with raspberries and nuts.
And it was just as purr-fect as it looks! Satisfying, filling, making me smile – and if I were known as Schiller, I would surely write an ode to it.
What is your favorite oatmeal recipe? And what kind of oats do you prefer to use – steel cut, rolled, instant, oat bran? And what do you like to have with your oats?

Oatmeal is definitely one of the most perfect foods, and your recipe looks fantastic! I love almost any kind of oats, but I especially love mixing textures. Usually I’ll combine steel cut and rolled just to make things more interesting. I cook them in water and add an egg white and banana. Then when they’re done, I top ‘em with almond butter and anything else I happen to be craving – yogurt, chocolate, fruits, jam, cereal, etc. Now I’m really wishing it was breakfast
why wait for breakfast? just eat them for dinner
!
I love oatmeal ! I eat them since I was a kid.
Sometimes I’m hungry at night and eat even then the oatmeal as a late-night snack
I can totally relate to that – I actually just had a small portion of yogurt and oatmeal for dessert!
But oatbran and steel cut oats are different things! I’m confused…
Whatever, this looks crazy good.
Do you blend the cottage cheese & greek yogurt together?
I have to agree , oats have got to be like the most perfect food. Ever.
I’m addicted:).
I love all the toppings and fixins’ you’ve mentioned . Nut butter and crumbled up, homemade baked goodies are also awesome.
Exactly, because I haven’t found steel cut oats in the store and accidentally bought oat bran, since I thought it was something similar. Of course it is not, but it is still pretty darn delicious!
And, yes mam, I do blend the cottage cheese & greek yogurt together – it does result in an amazing texture.
I’m the same about knowing English words but seriously having to think for a moment for their German equivalent
. Not so much with food items but embarrassingly others.
Oat bran is my favourite variety of the oat family and I’m glad you enjoy it, too. Have you tried stirring in a “caramelized” (microwaved) banana and cocoa powder yet?
.
I’m even particular about the place I buy it at because I’ve found there to be differences in texture. Alnatura/dm has the best one in my opinion and it’s nice for the cheapo in me, too
Will try this for breakfast today, thanks for the inspiration
I’m having oatmeal for breakfast tomorrow now! I really want to try steel cut oats but haven’t found them anywhere either. I once saw them in Whole Foods in London and still regret not buying them!
I generally use jumbo rolled oats. I don’t like them very processed otherwise they cook all mushy but I’m a bit oatbran fan too! It’s the one oat form that I like with nut butter. It makes such good PB&J oats.
Oatbran makes amazing cookies too!
Hope you have a great week!
Cookies, really? I do often use oat flour, but never tried oat bran. Chocolate chip cookies with oat bran will be the next one I make!
The texture is so nice! I particularly like oatbran and raisin but have never tried chocolate chip ones…I suspect yours will be so so good!
