Guess, you have all been waiting for some revision on my Organic On A Budget Challenge… or not 😉 . So, to be honest, I have to admit that I terribly failed on it. How come? Are 40€/week just not enough to buy delicious healthy organic groceries?
No, that is definitely not the reason, it was more of a bad timing situation. You remember that I mentioned a short trip to my aunts in the second week of my challenge. And of course we ate out a lot, bought our produce together and had a lot of chitter-chatter girl talk dinners with a bottle of wine or two. My mom, aunt and me enjoyed it a lot and I am not sorry at all that the challenge was taking a break. I also managed to find a huge organic supermarket close to my aunts home and pay there some visits. We enjoyed organic eggs for breakfast for example.
Huh, you are vegan right? I guess I have to rephrase my dietary lifestyle (and sometimes it seems so ridiculous to people caring so much about labeling the way they and others eat) – I call myself a vegan, because I eat this way 95% of the time (or 90% or 99%, who knows exactly?), but I do eat some stuff from time to time that is not vegan at all. First – I am a seafood eating vegan (if there is even such a thing) and do enjoy seafood once or twice every week, second – I do eat some goat cheese from time to time (I am a huge believer that cows milk does no good for the human body and I have a hard time digesting it) and third – since the mentioned trip to my aunts I do eat organic/happy chicken eggs. This was already more than I wanted to say about this, but I am planning to make a more accurate post about this soon.
Back to the challenge – afterwards it just did not feel like this “one month” thing anymore, since I cheated already. I had some eats out with my best friend and boy friend and due to time issues and convenience I bought some stuff at a normal grocery store which were not organic.
But do I think the challenge was a total fail? – Not at all!
I learned that it is possible and not even very hard to buy organic produce on a budget. I checked which fruits and vegetables were in season and tried to purchase them mostly on the farmers market. I also found this cute old couple who grow their own fruits and vegetables and raise their own chicken in their huge backyard and sell all their stuff solely on location. I payed them a visit and purchased a lot – and I must say, I am pretty happy about the way their chicken live and the quality of their produce. And best thing: it is way cheaper to buy the groceries directly from the producer than in a fancy organic grocery store.
What am I taking from the challenge? Am I going to buy exclusively organic in the future?
Most probably not. But I am thriving to buy as much as possibly organic. I am keeping the farmers market habit and going to visit the old couple more often. I am also trying to make my main grocery hauls in organic stores and just visit the normal ones in exceptional cases or if I need something that cannot be purchased at the organic store. I am also taking care that my body care products, make up and cleaning stuff is organic from now on. And taken together that is a bunch of great habits that I took from this challenge.
So now I would like to introduce you to Wednesday’s farmers market haul (which I did secretly throughout the whole post, like you may have noticed):
I purchased a bunch of fresh produce for just 17€. (There is even an apple missing in the picture, which I found later in my bag) And indulged it over the following days. Here is what I mostly made with it:
Huge Green Smoothie with Pumpkin Protein Bar Crumbles
I did all the chopping the night before, so that in the morning I just had to add some chia seeds, almond milk and frozen banana (not pictured).
- 1 cup fresh spinach
- a piece of cucumber
- 1 tiny (and I mean really tiny, probably 1/4 of a normal one) pear
- 1 peach
- 1/3 frozen banana
- 1 tsp chia seeds
- 1/3 cup oat milk
- left over protein bar/muffin/granola bar for garnish
With the additional protein bar this one was a great refuel after my morning run.
Lilou decided that it would be nice to cuddle the oat milk – and who can blame her?
Watercress Guacamole Salad with Falafel
- 1/2 cup watercress leaves
- 1/4 cucumber
- 2 tbsp avocado
- 1 small tomato
- 2 tbsp fresh (or not) corn kernels
- 2 tbsp spring onion, cut up in rings
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 1/2 tsp lime juice (you could also use lemon)
- salt and pepper to taste
- falafel made from a mix or store bought
As you can see I also prepared all of the ingredients the night before. I made some falafel using a great organic mix. Placed the watercress in my salad box, chopped up all of the left ingredients and dressed my guacamole with oil, lime, salt and pepper. So the next morning I just had to place the guacamole on top of the watercress and my cute little falafel around it. That was my lunch for the day.
And that’s where this long post comes to an end and leaves a lot of thoughts to be discussed in future posts. Btw I am planning on making a section (next to “about”, “temple cuisine” and “dojo” regarding “consciousness”). So wait for that.
