If there would be only one food that I could choose to bring to a desert island, it definitely would be oatmeal. In my book there is no breakfast that is more perfect and it makes also an awesome lunch, dinner or snack. On my search for steel cut oats, which are apparently one of the purest form of oatmeal you can make, I stumbled over this bag:
As it turned out this is the German equivalent for oat bran. Funny that I know ingredients by their English name and not how they are called in German. And who would have thought that this accidental buy would make for the most perfect version of fluffy oatmeal I cooked so far?

The Perfect Fluffy Oatmeal
- 1/2 cup oat bran
- 2 tbsp quick oats
- 1/2 cup milk of choice
- 1 cup water
- 1 sliced banana
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- dash of vanilla
- pinch of salt
Place the oat bran, quick oats, banana, milk and water in a pot. When it starts to cook, lower heat to medium-low and let them simmer until all liquid is absorbed. Add the egg and spices. Keep stirring on low heat for 2 minutes and let the magic happen.
Pour into a bowl and dig in, or into some tupperware container to place in your fridge for later. I did not give you any portion-recommendations since you can enjoy it as a meal on it’s own or add some fruit or yogurt or cottage cheese or more milk or … to it, the opportunities are endless.
I will use this batch for snacks for the next 2 or 3 days, and they will mostly look like this:
I love to add a lot to my oatmeal, that is why the portion will be enough for 3-4 snacks. This bowl is made of a base of greek yogurt and cottage cheese, a layer of oatmeal, poured over with some milk and topped of with raspberries and nuts.
And it was just as purr-fect as it looks! Satisfying, filling, making me smile – and if I were known as Schiller, I would surely write an ode to it.
